Kelly Loftus scored 23 points and tied a career high with five 3-pointers as the Mount Vernon girls’ basketball team defeated Centreville 65-52 in the opening round of the Northern Region tournament.

The West Springfield girls’ basketball team defeated T.C. Williams twice by a combined four points during the regular season, with each contest decided in the final seconds. When it came time to determine the 2012 Patriot District champion, senior guard Jordan Miller and the Spartans showed no desire for another dramatic finish.
Madison Defeats South Lakes in Liberty Girls Finals

The James Madison High girls’ basketball team played one of its best games of the season in last Friday night’s Liberty District tournament finals versus South Lakes. The defending district champion Warhawks were clicking in all areas of the game and kept a talented Seahawks’ squad at bay in a 78-47 victory. The postseason title game took place at South Lakes’ spacious Wendell G. Byrd Gymnasium in Reston.

Monday night’s first round Northern Region boys’ high school basketball playoff game, between a physically strong Westfield squad versus a running, defensive-pressure oriented Wakefield opponent, was pretty much close throughout. Both teams, with their seasons on the line, played as if there were no tomorrow. The result was like a close boxing match gone the distance as both the Warriors and home team Bulldogs continually took one another’s best shots only to come right back and deliver one themselves.

Three Northern Region teams – Robinson, Annandale, and Westfield High Schools – finished among the top 10 team finishers at last weekend’s Virginia State AAA Wrestling Championships, held Feb. 17-18 (Friday and Saturday) at Robinson Secondary.

The T.C. Williams boys’ basketball program has won the last four Northern Region tournaments for which it has qualified. Thanks to a career night from senior T.J. Huggins, the Titans will have a chance to extend the streak to five.
Wakefield’s Majano Captures Second Region Title

Henry Majano sat perched upon the first-place level of the awards podium during the Northern Region wrestling championships at Hayfield Secondary School. Sporting a headband and a "Wakefield Wrestling" T-shirt, Majano envisioned himself returning to his place atop the podium after his 132-pound title match.
Mount Vernon’s Floyd Captures Second Region Title
Majors finish fourth at region wrestling championships.
Centreville's Ryan Sepulveda challenged Mount Vernon's Dusty Floyd and held a 1-0 lead midway through the third period. But Floyd would not be denied as he tied the score with an escape and produced the winning points with a takedown in the final minute. Fans on both sides of the gym at Hayfield Secondary School chanted "Let’s go Dusty!" as Floyd won a 3-1 decision on Feb. 11.

Local Swimmers Step Up at Region Championships

Top Centre View-area individual girls’ finishers included: Chantilly’s Logan Coulson-Moore (third place in 100-back, fourth in 200-free); Westfield’s Carli Molano (second in 50-free); and Chantilly’s Maggie Shaw (7th in 500-free).
Westfield Captures Concorde Wrestling Title
Bulldogs take first ahead of defending Northern Region champion Robinson.
The Westfield High wrestling team put together a dominant showing at last weekend’s Concorde District Championships, held Friday and Saturday (Feb. 3-4) at Chantilly High School. The Bulldogs, behind seven individual champions, scored 207 points, well ahead of runner-up Robinson’s 165, to capture the district crown.
Oakton Boys, Girls Capture Region Swim and Dive Titles
Next up for Oakton is state championships meet Feb. 17-18.
Oakton High’s varsity boys and girls swim and dive teams both won their respective Northern Region Championship meets this past Saturday night, Feb. 4 at the Oak Marr Recreation facility. The Oakton boys scored 281.5 points to finish first over second place Woodson (250) and third place Madison (217). The Oakton girls scored a winning 245 points with West Potomac (190) and Langley (181) finishing second and third.

Robinson Secondary senior Tristian Crenshaw spent a lot of time as a child playing pickup basketball games with his grandparents James A. Boswell and Debbie Chandler-Boswell. But over time, those enjoyable games became less frequent.
TC’s Huggins Shines During Senior Night Victory
Titans looking to cut out mental lapses with postseason approaching.
T.J. Huggins finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds during the final regular season home game of his career, helping TC improve to 12-9, including 8-5 in the Patriot District. With the district tournament beginning Feb. 14, head coach Julian King said the Titans have the talent to compete in the postseason but the team has to cut out mental lapses.

The T.C. Williams boys' track and field team won the 2012 Patriot District championship, beating defending champion Annandale by 17 points last week at Episcopal High School.
